A clinical study of 103 cases of anal fistula

Abstract
This is a report of 103 cases of fistula-in-ano which were treated at National Medical Center from Apr. 1958 to Dec. 1971.

The results were as follows:

1. Of the 851 cases of anorectal disorders except congenital malformations and malignancies, the fistula-in-ano cases occupied 12.1% of all.

The sex ratio was male preponderance as 4. 4 : 1 and the most prevalent age group was 3 rd decade as 40. 8% of all.

2. The most common etiological factor of anal fistula was perianal abscess secondary to infection of anal crypt or hemorrhoid, and it was occounted for 83. 5% of all.

Tuberculous origin was accounted for 7.7% and malignancies of fistula were found in 2. 9%.

3. The predilection site of external orifice of fistula-in-ano was posterior of the anus, and multiple lesions were found in 17. 4%.

4. The anatomic types of fistula was classified into inter-sphincteric, trans-sphincteric, suprasphincteric, extrasphincteric, horseshoe, perianal sinus and undetermined groups.

Intersphincteric type was most frequent as 57. 2% of all and as 84. 3% of determined anatomic group.

5. Common combined other anal diseases were hemorrhoid, perianal abscess, anal fissure and rectoraginal fistula.

6. The majority of cases were operated by fistulectomy and postoperative results were satisfactory.

The confirmation and complete excision of the primary opening was important. Recurrence rate was 4.3%
